Lurking in Chat Rooms: Should You Do It?
For many chat room fans, the whole point is to put yourself out there and make new friends. However, there is a subset of people who want to simply observe chat sites and not participate.
These people are often called lurkers. And while some think they are not that great, lurking is honestly totally fine. You might think it is weird or strange to go to a social website only to remain completely silent.
But it makes sense when you think about it.
People are sometimes shy, especially when it comes to chats on certain topics. Other people want to learn about social interaction or study another language.
Others just want to sit back, eat popcorn, and watch the drama unfold!
It’s a Choice to Be Anonymous
The great thing about online chat rooms is that it is your choice to speak up or stay quiet. You don’t have to do or say anything that makes you uncomfortable. If someone questions why you’re not talking, you can stay silent or explain yourself.
Try looking for a good opportunity to break the ice.
And this is one of the few situations in life where it would be easy for you to be quiet in a room full of people. In real life, it would probably be pretty awkward, but in a chat room, most people will hardly notice.
Talk When the Time is Right
Your reasons for lurking in a chat room are your business.
If you never want to chat in an online situation, then there’s no pressure.
The anonymity of the internet can protect you. – And it’s not creepy to lurk either, even though some people say so.
Others might say that it’s actually a smart way to learn about things. However, if you do feel like you have something to add to the conversation don’t be afraid to speak up! Shyness is totally fine but don’t let it keep you from speaking up when you have something important to say.
Whether your a lurker or a busy chatter, chat experiences are all different.
